It is quite overcast this morning. We camped in the Valle of Fires last night; lava fields in the midst of a wide valley between the, well, looking at the map, I can’t tell which mountain ranges. There are quite a few ranges coming in at Carizozo. At any rate, the mountains were gorgeous![]()
and we camped up on a rise in the middle of the valley and the middle of the lava flow. We were absolutely and completely alone but surprised to find a Class A leaving this morning as we woke.

The lava fields were simply amazing; much more so due to the mountains surrounding us. I kept looking for the volcano that the lava belonged to but found that the lava was generated but underground vents. Kind of hard to wrap your mind around that one after spending so much time in the land of volcanos.
We had read that the Valle of Fires was BLM ground and there were no services, so around and
around little Carizozo we drove looking for a place to fill up with water. We finally found one and headed off the the campground sloshing a full water tank. We were amazed to pull into the campground and find not only water, but electric hookups and cavernous bathrooms. It was a beautiful camp and I’m surprised we didn’t stay longer. The only downside was the incredible proliferation of flies. Large flies, small flies, baby flies; they would cover us and pester us until we headed indoors. In wind and riding bikes they were inconsequential, but walking was a chore.

So, this morning, we’re off to Hyde Memorial Park in Santa Fe. We’re taking the backroads of course but with only 170ish miles to cover we’re loving the rolling hills, the foothills of too many mountain ranges to mention and the tall peaks in the distance. I don’t know if we got terribly used to 2 lane roads in Mexico, but i really have no desire to travel the Interstate.
