when your baby sister, the one you have been introducing Ashtanga Yoga to (via a book, but still…) manages to start doing JUMP THROUGHS (the part she is doing is the part after down dog) without a second thought, after only a week of practice. I don’t know WHY *I* can’t do the same; I’ve been practicing MUCH longer than her (could it be the extra (at least) 50lb?). She is really getting a good workout with her vinnies now (we would certainly be laughed out of a class with our illegal yoga talk) and I simply watch as she not only can jump through but is working on jumping back.
Sissy and Ellen had an impromptu session this morning; Sissy dragged out the mats and instructed Ellen in the finer points of Yoga and then they both simply looked at the book and attempted poses. Pictures to come. It was pretty cute. Our health insurance cards have ARRIVED so we are planning to leave next Wednesday. Chris and I have planned a trip to a real shala (yoga studio) on Monday evening and I’m considering a kids Tuesday class so we’re “booked” til then.
(she is doing JUMP THROUGHS!!!)

I practiced ashtanga yoga regularly for a couple years (before i moved to Mali) and I could NEVER do the jumpthroughs. I got better at almost everything except those, no matter how hard I tried, and I tried hard!
I decided it was because my arms were too short — I felt like I couldn’t get enough lift. The teacher didn’t believe me. But I still think that’s it.
Congratulations to each Yoga participant! The pictures of Sissy and Ellen were precious! How about a picture of Chris doing a jumpthrough?
I am jealous.
Love,
mom
I’m interested in learning which book you are using.
Boo Hoo, I want to do yoga with my sisters.
Michelle, you have a date next July. No?
Janet; we’re using David Swenson’s A Practice Manual – I’ll put a link to it in today’s post).
Tata got to see Chrissy do a jump through – it is quite impressive. Even if you have to wait for Becky to get out from underneath her.
Robin, while I don’t have that excuse, thank you so much for helping me feel better.
July, YES. Even better – doing yoga lake side. maybe we will have to build a portable platform for doing yoga anywhere on the property?
Don’t be disheartened, I’ve known Ashtangis who have been practicing for 2 years + and still can do jump throughs!
I’m able to do them on good days, but I’m aching to get to the day where I can “float” through… I’m a LOOOOoooooonng way off
Oh and here’s a link to a review of David Swenson’s book: http://www.rateyoga.com/resource/107
Admittantly, this is my site and my review.
I don’t know why I never noticed your Yoga posts before, but now I’ve read through a bunch of them. And I’m inspired! I’ve done yoga on and off all my life, but haven’t done any since getting a puppy last August. No time, I thought! But if you can manage with four kids, certainly I can manage with two puppies and a job (and a husband. no wait, two jobs…whatever). Anyway, thanks for the inspiration…
Well, I must be honest, I haven’t done Yoga since Michael came back. You’d think I would have more time now, but you’d be wrong.
