Two-E is now a Tropical Storm (Barbara) and must be the cause of the issuing of water from the sky. Normally in the rainy season we get dumped on in the afternoon but the rest of the day is sunny. I think we’ve gone two days (that’s TWO DAYS, PEOPLE!!!) without sun. I . . . → Read More: wet rain wet wet rainy rainy wet

Tropical depression Two-E hanging around the Pacific Coast. We’ve had rain and cloudy days for a couple days now and more in the forecast. It might sound refreshing, but what it really means is a boom in mozzies and air you can see. Humidity at 95-100% with weather in the mid 80’s makes for . . . → Read More: Mexico starts her season early this year

We know time moves much slower down here in Mexico and things are done differently. It will generally take 3 or more tries before you can accomplish anything. But after 4 or 5 days of waiting for the palapero to show up and the security guard to tell him that we wanted to see him (to fix the damage to the palapa) we decided to take things into our own hands. The office doesn’t have Dino’s (our palapero) phone number because they prefer to work with David (dah-veeedth). So we talked to the security guard, who is our contact for Dino and told him we were tired of waiting and wanted to get something going, even if it meant going with David (thems fighting words woman!). Sexto, the head security guard looked all over the security shack and could not, for love or money, come up with Dino’s phone number even though he’d had it onceuponatime. Instead he told us Dino lived nearby and gave us vague directions to Dino’s house. Listening to his directions, I realized that we were going to have to cross the land of grievances. We’ve heard that the land next door is currently in dispute and recently someone came running down the beach with a machete wound to the head, obviously the looser in the dispute of the day. So we were quite wary of passing through this land. Continue reading Finally on Mexican Time

You’ve been warned.
Yesterday I cleaned up the trailer, stowed everything and readied for travel. It has been SO LONG since we’ve done that I think we thought it simply Was No Longer Possible. But not only was it possible, it was surprisingly freeing! I had become so attached to the idea of permanence and so overwhelmed by the thought of packing all the crap up that I think I thought it simply couldn’t be done. And once I got that trailer hitched up behind me, man o man, I was ITCHING to get on the road and on to new adventures. Because making a home for a year in Mexico simply isn’t quite enough adventure for me. I guess I just can’t get enough of seeing new places and things and after Two Whole Months in the same place, this is just too much of the same-old same-old. So, after the insane sellers of the “orange” palapa flaked out by simply refusing to respond to our emails, we became very sad and pouted for about a day. That’s when I realized that we really want to do this thing. I’m not sure why but I think the kids are just very . . . → Read More: As the palapa turns, final installment. I hope. We’ll see. We had an amazing thunderstorm late this afternoon and the temperature plummeted into the high 70’s. The kids put on their fleece and long pants and Ellen asked me if it was winter now. We had a brief dip into the 60’s at night a few weeks ago (it was still very hot during . . . → Read More: Thin blood

So, we’d heard horror stories about the sellers of the palapa pictured below. We’d heard that they’d divorced and one would offer to sell the palapa and the other would refuse once all the details had been hammered out. We’d heard the couple referred to as “Dumb and Dumber” but no-one seemed to know . . . → Read More: Insanity makes for a poor seller

I had a really wonderful day. And I hope you did too. Tomorrow we go back to hammering out the contract and hopefully it will all be over and we can start working on remodeling and hurricane reconstruction.
By Mamahops, on May 9th, 2007
We have a signed, notarized contract from the sellers. Unfortunately, they went to the trouble of notarizing a contract they knew we disagreed with. Sometimes you have to wonder about people. We’ll see if they get the corrections made, signed and notarized again by 4pmCT today. After that we wash our collective hands of . . . → Read More: Our top story

Yes, friends, you’ve tuned into another epiosde of, “As the Palapa Turns”. Stay tuned to find out WHERE the family will live! Will they hit the road when their rent ends May 9th? With they kill each other in a WW3 of elbowitis? Will 300sqft over 3 years lead to absolute anarchy?
