Oh. My. Freaking. Gawd. If one isn’t barfing, they’re barking (cough). If they’re not barfing or barking, they’re being schlepped to parkday or Andrew’s house or (cue angels harps) Target. Some one, if not more than one, has been sick each and every day since the 3rd day we arrived. Jamie got pretty sick and tired of me complaining about being sick and tired but he now has seen the light and it is moldy. I think the sun has come out two days in the month we’ve been here. We have spent more time in the car, in this past month, than we have in the year we’ve been traveling. Well, it sure seems that way. The boys are TERRIBLY depressed (I keep checking to see if they’re sick or not) when they’re not with the 3rd Musketeer; they’re not interested in the lake, the trails, the library, the playground, the stores, food - nothing matters unless Andrew is involved. So we drive the drive and try to time it for carpool time or it can take hours to drive the 40 miles between Aunty Chris’s house and his. I’m coming to really love audio books. We got some Narnia books and CD’s at the library to pass the many many hours we spend in the car.
I know I had much much more to spew but I think the traffic gods ate my brain.
Really, I think I’m brain dead; I’ve been composing a post in my head forever (one arm usually trapped under a sick girl at night and unable to type and away from the computer all day in freaking TRAFFIC and unable to post) and I can’t remember a single thing I wanted to share. But isn’t the complaining and bitching so much more fun to read?
What with all the sickness, you’d think that we’d be svelte and trim but the opposite has occured. With the addition of clothing (and MUCH MUCH WARM clothing is absolutely necessary in this frigid north) and the lack of exercise, we’re packing the pounds on. I’m really hoping that when we get back to the warm we’ll exercise again, but who can tell here when you’re wearing 10lb of clothing just to stay warm? Man o man, I can’t WAIT to come back to the US again. We really have no one to blame but ourselves; we left the cold germs for years and then popped back right at cold and flu season; what do we expect? To be not sick, apparently. Sheesh!
It is immeasurably different here and while Jamie is loving the weather, I can’t wait to get back. I’m eagerly researching our winter trip to Guatemala and Honduras (or El Salavador, not sure where or what or why, other than to put the rubber side down) and enjoying the short time we have left here with family. But if nothing else, this trip has taught me that my heart is most definitely on the road somewhere and that the somewhere is most definitely south of the 20th parallel.
I have been nothing but a grump this entire post but I can’t help myself; maybe once the grump is out something better will come out. Sigh.

Grump away. I totally can relate. We all have strep throat here, and I am soooooo tired of feeling sick and tired.
We are planning our summer trip, and it looks like we are going to try 2 weeks in the 4 corners….only, we are not bringing the Little House. We will be tenting it….with 4 kids. Totally insane and fun. So, I too am immersed in researching, buying camping stuff etc.
Have a happy Thanksgiving.

Geez, and I was just missing Cali. Southern Cali, of course, where it never rains and is always sunny.
Good to hear from you, even if you are grumpy.

Just thought you’d like to know that I wore sweat pants, t-shirt, + fleece jacket to dinner the other night - here in Akumal!

Well…I am glad you can bitch till your heart’s content…sometimes it helps! Being a grandma is wonderful…I can remember all the fever and wretching and sleepless nights with our own daughters (4) which I somehow survived. Now it is their turn! Life is sweet. Just remember there is light at the end of the tunnel. And we will be going to the Yucatan…leaving Texas in a week! Can we bring you anything??
Adios…Coral

He he he. Here, I just drove up to the new Target in Marina to buy Kezzie some long-sleeve shirts and jeans - she’s been completely happy in shorts, but I think it’s getting a little nippy down here in the Salinas Valley. See the difference in perception when you’re a born-again Mexican versus an indigenous Mainiac. Sadly, I’ve been rethinking my law-school choices based on climate - I’m really beginning to like enjoyable weather year-round. Not to say I’d take Hastings over Michigan, but the former is looking awfully good right now ;).
Here’s hoping you all get healthy soon. Miraculously, we’ve all been pretty healthy this fall - of course, we’re usually mid-winter victims, so I’m sure our time will come.
