wasted days…

August 30th, 2008 · No Comments

I have wasted the entire afternoon absolutely GLUED to Weather Underground watching Gustavo.  It is so hard to believe that a Cat4 hurricane that has (most likely) devestated Cuba has been offshore all day long.  I used the excuse that you never turn your back/computer/attention away from a hurricane that closeby but it was also [...]

Found the rudder

August 29th, 2008 · 1 Comment

After a week of being rudder-less, I had a good talk with the doctor and am going to try a week of the Nimotop and see what happens.  He treats a LOT of divers and has had good success with this medicine so I’m going to go with it.  Making that decision and talking to [...]

yeah, it’s been a little quiet lately

August 29th, 2008 · 2 Comments

I have lots of excuses; I’ve been trying to get all kinds of “stuff” to Natalie’s sister so she can bring it down to us (mostly books), I’ve been trying to figure out what other materials I want to get (we’re finishing up World History and moving on to Ancient Cultures), obsessively checking the weather [...]

Still coming out of the fog

August 24th, 2008 · 4 Comments

I am having a difficult time coming back from whatever happened on Thursday. Systemic, local, reaction, whatever. I have had severe GI issues (which are supposed to be a sign of allergic reaction, according to Dr. Jamie-Google), sweats, foggy head and dizziness. At least the fever is gone and I think the [...]

Weekly reading

August 24th, 2008 · No Comments

Mostly for my own benefit, I am keeping a weekly report of books we’ve read and some of what we’ve done with academics this week.  I’m not sure I’ll keep it up.
Jesse Reading:
Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry
Pike Reading:
Stone Fox
Mom Reading to boys:
Arabs in the Golden Age
Finished Shadow Spinner
Started Genghis Khan and the Mongol Hordes
Mom [...]

how NOT to spend your thursday

August 23rd, 2008 · 9 Comments

It has been a crazy 24 hours.  I have always reacted very poorly to the yellow flies here but after Thursday afternoon I can no longer keep my head in the sand and mumble “I’m NOT allergic! I’m NOT allergic!”
Yesterday I was bitten by 2 yellow flies. From what we can tell they are very [...]

quickie

August 20th, 2008 · 4 Comments

Quickie post while I eat breakfast and get ready for shopping today.
82 and holding.  I am VERY happy to have finally dropped that damn kilo.
Dysequilibrium/vertigo seems to be ear-related.  Taking garlic and putting drops in ear.  I’ll try this for a week and if no improvement in dysequilibrium I’ll go back to doctor.
Still no cubano [...]

Posers evermore

August 17th, 2008 · 4 Comments

We went back to Bead Beach today; it was Pikey’s turn and both boys have been dying to go back, skin their shins and knees, rib skin off, add more grey hairs to my head and frolick with the tourists.  We have such a warped view here from many others who come here - we [...]

It’s always minutea, isn’t it?

August 13th, 2008 · 9 Comments

“H” inflammation of “E” the mucous “L” membranes of the nasal “M” cavity.  This is how I spend too many of my days, reading medical texts while spelling out words to Ellen.  It’s a wonder I don’t have all of it mixed up and now that I’m over 1/2 way through the course I think [...]

Turning in my unschooling membership card

August 1st, 2008 · 12 Comments

Today I attempted to connect with other unschoolers on an email list and was told that since Jesse went to Kindie (his choice; I SO TRIED to talk him out of it) I couldn’t call myself an unschooler for this and many other reasons.  Honestly, I don’t really care for labels.  I was, however, looking [...]
