I remembered from driving to Valladolid realizing that I have a certain loyalty to Quintana Roo (the state we live in) as, upon viewing a highway sign which states, “In Yucatan (state) we keep our roads clean” I immediately thought, “Well, in Quintana Roo, we do the SAME!”. So I guess I consider myself a quintanarooense. This trip I noticed a much larger number of these same signs after Valladoild than before.
The hotel is modern with a little colonial flavor. We have two rooms with two doubles and the owner is being incredibly kind by charging us a VERY discounted rate. The grounds and pool are absolutely lovely and I can’t imagine we’ll have anything but raves about this place.
If you ever want to fall in lovel with Merida, arrive on a Sunday. The country is sleeping, the city is sleeping, everything is closed, even certain streets. I’ve read about “Domingo en Merida” ocassionally and it is better than I imagined. Lots of food boothes and people watching and amazing colonials and all kinds of humankind strolling and perusing and enjoying the evening. I have a feeling the city will ramp up amazingly tomorrow and we’ll need next Sunday to unwind.
Jesse was only able to find one pair of pants to pack. And one pair of shorts. He has somehow been without pants and shorts for quite a while, even though I asked him when Mega had it’s clothing clearance if he needed any he said he was good. Eventually it even ocurred to him that he needed something for the bottom half (but reports he’s good to go for the top half) but he still decided not to say anything until he started packing for the trip last night.
Sissy, not to be outdone by her brother, packed 2 shirts and one pair of shorts. For a week. No idea why she decided all her other clothing was not necessary. Ellen, however, packed almost every piece of clothing she owns as well as the clothes which belong to Sissy that she covets. So thanks to Ellen, if Sissy can bring herself to wear skorts and shirts without holes that actually look nice, she’ll be good to go.
One of the reasons we decided to stay in a hotel in the centro rather than the RV park on the outskirts of town was so that Jamie and I could stroll in the evenings and salivate over colonials. This is proving to be such a perfect choice as we left the kids with Laurel and Hardy movies and headed out this evening and almost died from “oohing” and “ahhhing” over colonial after stately colonial. I can’t wait for the sun tomorrow and the opportunity to capture some of these homes on digital “film”.

Siiiigggghhhh…. some day. It looks wonderful. Can’t wait for more photos (and medical news). Love, C
The town looks beautiful and your descriptions make us want to go down too! -
I am LOVING the pics. What a gorgeous place.
Enjoy, and keep the posts and pics coming!
We were driving up Calle 68 and saw an enormous van with what looked like a customized top, was that you? The van was tall enough to stand up in and was a dark colour.
Merida is easy to fall in love with.
