SF Bay area to Bakersfield

Well, compared to George, we moved mountains but we are, for the first time as a family, in a mode of travel we’ve never been in before.  Putting in the miles.  Right now, I”m watching the entire family sleep.  Two boys on the floor, Jamie, Sissy and Ellen in beds and I’m up.  I was up until 2am and had hoped to get a run in this morning, but I didn’t have my run stuff ready and a few hours sleep wasn’t going to do it, AND I had no idea of times.  One of the times I got up it was dawn and that was probably the time I should have gone.  Maybe I can get one in tonight at the motel because Jamie is going to FREAK at how late it is (9:23am PDT) once he wakes and will spur everyone into action.  I really want to let him sleep though – he hasn’t been getting good sleep.  I know I’m going to be kicking myself for updating now instead of running though.

We meandered and meandered and meandered yesterday and stopped about eleventymillion times and found diesel for $2.65/gallon and then HAD to stop for that.  We had thought we’d travel the southern route, through AZ and NM, but last night we decided to try for the canyonlands.  Unfortunately, that left us at end of day in an area with little motel choices so we changed the route again.  Well, we’ll see what happens tomorrow.  All I know is we’re headed either for Williams (Motel 6 and have kids frustrated with no internet) or Flagstaff (nice hotel/suites with beds for everyone and deluxe breakfast but trains all night).  I think Flagstaff might win for many reasons, the chief one being a fitness center so I can treadmill it without worrying about finding a running route in the dark in a strange large city.  Next city HAS to be a small one.  We much prefer the small towns.

Yikes!  Jamie is awake!  (Oh, dinner for tonight is already cooked – crockpot full of chicken, salsa and corn – in the bathroom).  We decided to try to make dinner every night while we’re sleeping and hold it until around 5pm where we’ll find a good place for Kilo to run (lots of open grass) and the kids to play and have dinner there.  Course, this is the plan while it is warm.  We’re headed for Frozeness.  Who’s idea was this anyway?

so are you coming here first (say yes, say yes). so ann is coming in 14 days – when might you all get here? i’m dying to know. we would of course love to have you for as many days as we can BEFORE she arrives. then of course the carriage house is reserved for her. oh, i hope you come here soon – and safely of course! would love to try some running with you – but i will be pathetic. this pneumonia has take some of my lung capacity with it (it is coming back thank god!). it warmed up today to 68F! it started at 38F – so I was pretty happy with that!
