Mexico’s 2010 census workers came by last night and were very happy to accept cold coco water while we chatted. They were surprised that we’re not enrolled in IMSS and told us to keep working on that tramite, that it was worth the hassle. I’m not planning on using IMSS as our primary health service but instead in the event someone comes down with a cancerous type of illness which would require many many millions of pesos of investment. They’re building a new hospital on the arco vial and I expect it will be as state of the art as Cancun’s.
I’m getting much closer to putting the girls in school (Ak Lu’um), a Waldorf school, more for the cultural and social opportunities than anything else. They are so very isolated here. Course, school is about to let out for the month of July, and I’m hoping to just get them in for a week or so to try the school idea out. I’m not hoping for a lot of scholastic value – more social and cultural. School isn’t cheap though at $4000/month (MN) and multiple, constant fees, but since public school is not an option for we foreigners, we don’t have too many other choices. Simply having a Waldorf school (there are actually 2 in town) is amazing, but really shows how many Europeans live here.
The turtles are FINALLY nesting! I counted 12 nests on our beach and 12 on 1/2 of the beach to the north. I am so relieved as I believe that the number of turtle nests directly corresponds to direct hits from hurricanes. I’m prognosticating NO hits within 300 km this year. We’ll see how that goes.
I got my DESKTOP!!! I ordered it on 5/31, it was canceled and so I ordered another (which was canceled) and then a Compaq from Staples. By the time I received all the cancellation notices the 1st (canceled) system showed up at Merkalink in Texas, so I imported that baby and am LOVING Windows 7. I really thought I’d hate it and was counting the days until I got Professional and XP mode, but honestly, it is really a nice OS. It is like the best of Apple (which I HATE) mixed with XP. I also am trying out the local wireless provider here and am LOVING not worrying about downloads.
Work is really slowing down and I’m currently looking for (yet another) client. I have a job offer from one really good sounding one and have signed papers and all so it is just a matter of waiting for their HR to catch up. Even better is that they offer direct deposit making my middleman obsolete. Well, at least for that client.
Our Canadian neighbors are leaving at the end of the month and I think we might start working on Merida then. I’ve been holding off due to the kids (and work) but actually sent keys and instructions off to friends of the architect and we’re waiting for plans/info from him as to what possibilities there are and costs. I’m thinking of a run/race pretty soon as weekends are pretty slow with work, and hopefully we’ll check in with him then.
And that’s all the news that’s fit to print.

Oops! That friend has to get on talking to the architect. I will do that as soon as the birthday fever is over around here.
I think it is a very good idea to get the girls in school. You know that. Women all over the world have struggled and are still struggling so hard to be allowed to go to school, it’s an opportunity for growth that all women should get.
Where pray tell is there a “state-of-the-art” hospital in Cancun?
You CAN enroll your kids in public school. We have reciprocal agreement with USA/Mexico regarding schools. If there is good one you might try. Your girls may find Waldorf easier to adjust to though.
I think that the important thing you learn in school is what is important to your culture and how things are done, not necessarily book learning per se.
regards,
Theresa
The girls might really enjoy going to “school” …
Be careful of getting into racing (running) too soon ….
Keep us posted on the turtles – sounds fascinating!
We’ll be thinking about all of you when we get to Lake Lotto. John will attend!
Merida work sounds exciting and a move forward! No doubt you’ll all miss your Canadian friends. Will they return come Fall/Winter?
When you see them, give Jonna and Mimi hugs from us.
p.s. I LOVE the pictures at the top of your web….. Lovely!
I should hope your middleman will not be obsolete, that one client or no…
@Jonna – It is a HUGE quandry because I totally believe in the homeschooling model but with me working fulltime I just don’t have the time to do it, and they are so isolated here they NEED contact with other kids. But school is SO expensive it isn’t funny. And about the haus – don’t worry. It isn’t going anywhere.
USMD – which are you discounting?
@Theresa – No manches! I had no idea. Well, I think a small class size (Ak Lu’um is 11 for Ellen and 5 for Sissy’s) is about what they’ll do best in for now. I will definitely look into public options though, especially since I’m not really looking at school to provide them with academics.
@Mom – thanks for noticing the pictures. Took me a while to get it all working. I need to get some more recent ones though. I’m taking it slow with running and really listening to that calf. My love to John at Lotto and I’m really jealous of you guys up there but with 2 possible trips this year (Maca’s 100th and spreading of Elinor’s ashes) I just don’t see it as financially feasible. One of these years though…
@Dad – never.
As long as Puyallup exists (and I LOVE those docs) you’ll never be obsolete.
